Lamont Carey

I believe in the impossible. I do it everyday.

From 12 to 15 when the street life was thought to be good.

A positive Role model seemed more of a fairytale than a reality in the community I grew up in. The lines of what is right and what is wrong became blurred when what’s wrong is prevalent. At an early, age I was told that the drug game would bring me riches. There was no other ways to success for black boys who can’t play sports. I wanted out of my community, so I became a dealer. I thought BMWs and fur coats were signs of my success.

The streets get tighter.

Drugs lead to guns. Guns lead to violence. For every choice we make there are other choices we have to make in association with the first decision. By the age of 16, I was charged as an adult for violent crimes and drug related offenses.

When the good street life ended as fast as it came.

Then I was convicted and sent to prison where thousands of little boys and men made some of the same decisions I made.

Too many youth believe that acceptance and escape can be found through fast money. Criminal activity. The only thing that can be found in criminal activity is being arrested, getting murdered by someone you know, and growing older in a cell with someone you can never fully trust.

I had to come face to face with that harsh reality. This changed me.  Change was not easy because all I knew was fast money and violence. However determination and a goal produces amazing things. I, eventually, enrolled in college. Then I dreamed of starting my first business SERVING-N-TIME. After my released I started two other companies CONTACT VISITS and LaCarey Entertainment, LLC.

Every child and adult is capable of great things if  they are made aware of other options.

“Lamont Carey delivers a poem [I Can’t Read] about a successful black athlete who has never been taught how to read that is not only brilliantly written but perfectly read.”
