Lamont Carey

I believe in the impossible. I do it everyday.

The Spokenword Artist

The choice to pursue spokenword was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I used to think poetry was lame, boring, and didn’t connect to my life until I experienced spokenword first hand. This taught me that poetry could be written, spoken and performed anyway my mind wanted to present it. I fell in love with the stage, the fans, and the creativity of my mind. This new creativity helped me find solutions to problems and to think more critically about my life and what I wanted to accomplish. It gave me a new and fulfilling freedom. And when I teach others how to write poems, I believe I am teaching them how to free themselves as well.

I am not a student of poetry. I didn’t study it in college. I never read poetry except  in language arts classes but I did not let that hinder me. Experiencing spokenword live showed me that poetry is not limited by Shakespeare or formats. It re-enforced my belief that my uniqueness takes away any limitation I thought existed. I ended up free-styling my whole spokenword CD “IMAGINE” in studio (except for the pieces “Imagine” and “Alter Ego”) and sold over 15,000 copies within the first year. To this day my first CD continues to sell worldwide and create additional opportunities for me. Order your copy of my IMAGINE CD by pressing this link: "IMAGINE" CD.

Upcoming Projects

My good and bad experiences as a spokenword artist has taught me how to be a better artist and businessman. These experiences have led me to write one of my upcoming books entitled, “The Business Side Of Spokenword”. The focus of "The Business Side Of Spokenword" is to share some of the lessons I have learned as an artist with other artist and to provide other options on branding, networking, and creating opportunities to make money as a full time artist. The book is scheduled to be released in 2013.

“Lamont Carey delivers a poem [I Can’t Read] about a successful black athlete who has never been taught how to read that is not only brilliantly written but perfectly read.”
